インディアナポリスの若き検事補アナベス･チェイス。彼女が３ヵ月の産休から戻ると、同僚のモリーンが出世し、自分の直属の上司になっていた。さらに上司の主任検事スティーヴからの命令で、アナベスは２人の子供を閉じ込めたまま自宅に放火したことを自供しているモリーの事件を担当することになる。その後モリーは、夫の虐待と監禁から逃れるため自宅に放火し助けを呼んだと語るが、さらに後には暴力的な夫に再びおびえて口をつぐんでしまう。
