アメリカで1961年から1966年に放送された「ベン・ケーシー」は、若き優秀な脳外科医ベン・ケーシーが医療現場で起きる様々なアクシデントや、患者との交流を通じて成長する姿を描き人気を博した医療ドラマである。
日本では1962年の放送開始から間もなく、女性層を中心としたヴィンセント・エドワーズ（ベン・ケーシー役）の人気とともに常に高い視聴率を維持し、1963年には最高視聴率50.6％（ビデオリサーチ・関東地区調べ）という驚異的な数字を記録。日米ともに社会現象を巻き起こし、その後に続く医療ドラマ・ジャンルの先駆け的存在となった。
本作ではヴィンセント・エドワーズが主人公のベン・ケーシーを演じ、彼の指導者である先輩医師デヴィッド・ゾーバをサム・ジャッフェが演じる。
生死の境を分けるスリリングな手術シーンもリアルに描かれ、放送当時は大きな話題となったが、本作は、そのオープニング（「男、女、誕生、死亡、そして無限」のナレーションとともに、黒板に「♂, ♀, ✳, †, ∞」の記号がチョークで描かれる場面）も広く知られている。
