２０歳で「サタデー・ナイト・ライブ」のレギュラー出演者として出演後、８０年代の映画話題作に続々と登場。『レス・ザン・ゼロ』のドラッグに溺れるジュリアン役でブレイクするも、その後その役を真似るかのように、1996年に飲酒運転およびヘロインとコカイン所持、銃の所持で逮捕。それから2001年まで、法廷で様々な争いがあった後、ＴＶ「アリー・myラブ」のレギュラーとして復帰。ゴールデングローブ賞を受賞し、エミー賞にもノミネートされるが、再びドラッグによりドラマも降板することに。しかしリハビリを受け、立ち直った彼は、続けざまに『アイアンマン』、『シャーロック・ホームズ』の主役として復活する。
