フロリダ州で連続殺人事件が発生。4人の女性が拷問の末に溺殺されるというもので、犯人はマーク・グレゴリーという男であることが特定されていた。だがマークは新たな被害者と共に姿を消す。銀行預金をすべて下ろし、自宅に帰る意思が見えないことから、ギデオンたちはグレゴリーを短時間で多数の人間を殺す「スプリー・キラー」に分類。この種の殺人者は乱殺後に本当の目的を遂げる場合が多いことから、その目的を探るべく父親に会いに行く。
