ジョージア州アトランタ。裕福な家の娘アシュリーは失恋して落ち込む姉ヴァネッサを励まそうと、人気のクラブに誘う。翌日、四つん這いの状態で腹部と喉を切り裂かれたヴァネッサの死体が発見される。さらに１年前、同じ手口で２人の娼婦が殺されていたことがわかり、ＢＡＵは同一犯による連続殺人事件として捜査を開始する。最大の謎は１年間のブランクののち、まるで異なるタイプの被害者を襲ったことだ。ホッチはとりあえず犯人を別個の殺人者として考え、共通項を絞り込んで行こうと提案する。
