シリアル・キラー(連続殺人犯)を専門に扱う、FBIのエリート・プロファイラー・チーム“BAU（行動分析課）”。しかし、BAUだけの力では数々の凶悪事件を根絶することはできず、ＦＢＩ長官であるフィックラーは新たに非公式捜査班「レッドセル」を結成する。
この特命捜査班のリーダーに選ばれたのは、元ＢＡＵの一流プロファイラーにして武道の達人、サム・クーパー。そして、彼のもとに集うのは、クールな知性派捜査官で副リーダーのベス、ある理由から服役した過去を持つシムズ、英国特殊部隊の凄腕スナイパーだったミック、軍人の父親を持つタフな女性ジーナ。また、BAUの天才分析官ガルシアも「レッドセル」への協力を惜しまない。
能動的でスピーディな捜査チームを求めるフィックラーＦＢＩ長官の要請に応じ、組織やルールに縛られることなく型破りな捜査を行う彼らは、全米各地に飛び犯人像をプロファイリングし、ありとあらゆる方法で凶悪犯罪に挑んでいく。
