アメリカ中北部オハイオ州のある町に住む一家を描くホームコメディ。いつの時代、どこの国にでもある家庭のさまざまな出来事が、抜群のユーモアと辛口のアイロニーをこめて描かれ、大人気となったコメディ・シリーズ「ファミリータイズ」。本作は米NBCネットワークで1982年より1989年までの間に全7シーズンに渡って放送され、年間視聴率は最高で32.7％を記録し、エミー賞やゴールデングローブ賞主演男優賞受賞に輝く大ヒット作。本作が本格デビューとなった主演のマイケル・J・フォックスは、この作品で全米のアイドルとなり、映画『バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー』、『摩天楼はバラ色に』に抜擢されることに。さらにエミー賞には1986年、1987年、1988年の3年連続でエミー賞主演男優賞を受賞している。なお、この作品での共演がきっかけで後に結婚したマイケル・J・フォックスの妻トレイシー・ポランや、映画『スクリーム』やTV「フレンズ」で大人気のコートニー・コックスがマイケル演じるアレックスの恋人役で登場している。
