銃撃事件が起き、リンゼイ・カーソンが逮捕される。調べが進むと、重傷の被害者メイヤーは、リンゼイの父親リッグが犯した射殺事件の証人だったと判明。犯行時の記憶がないと主張したリッグのため、精神障害の症状だと証言したのが専門家証人のメイヤーだった。しかし陪審の評決は有罪。リンゼイはメイヤーに対し上訴審での証言を依頼したが、拒否されていた。
