1966年に全米で爆発的な人気を集めたスパイ・ドラマシリーズ「スパイ大作戦」の続編。オリジナルから引き続きリーダーのジム・フェルプスを演じるのはお馴染みのピーター・グレイブス。またグラント役のフィル・モリスは旧メンバーのバーニー役グレッグ・モリスの実の息子である。そのグレッグ・モリスはオリジナルのままのバーニー役で「死刑囚バーニー」「黄金の蛇」にゲスト出演、フィルと親子共演を果たした。毎回作戦を伝えるのが、オリジナルシリーズでのテープレコーダーから小型レーザーディスクに変化しているという設定が、いかにも1980年代というテイストをかもし出している。
