エンタープライズは惑星４号付近で、６年前に行方不明なったUSSビーグル号の残骸が浮遊しているのを発見。ビーグル号の乗組員たちが惑星４号に上陸した可能性もあり、カーク、スポック、マッコイは調査に向かう。上陸した惑星４号はなんと、地球とまったく生き写しで、ただ違うのはローマ帝国が滅亡していないことだけだった・・・。
