殺人課の刑事サラ・ルンドは、恋人のいるスウェーデンに移住を計画していた。しかしコペンハーゲンでの勤務最終日、後任であるイエン・マイヤに引継ぎをしていた時、二人のもとに不穏な知らせが入る。一方、一流政治家トロールスは、現市長であるブレーマーを相手に市長選挙に臨んでいた。世論ではトロールスの勝利が有望視されていたが、思わぬ事件に巻き込まれてしまう。捜査でタイス・ビルク・ラールセンの家を訪れたサラとイエンは、そこでタイスの愛娘ナナの行方がわからないことを知り、悪い予感がするのだが……。
