世界各地の大都市の上空に突如、宇宙から飛来した５０隻もの巨大ＵＦＯが出現する。中から現れたエイリアンたちの外見は意外にも人間と同じで、彼らは友好と平和のため、人類と交流したいと申し出てくる。人類は彼らを“ビジター（来訪者）”と呼んで歓迎、平和な共同生活が始まるが、同時に科学者たちが姿を消す事件が次々と発生する。
TVカメラマンのマイク・ドノバンは、彼らの消息とビジターの真実を突き止めるためエイリアンの母船に忍び込む。そこでマイクは、ビジターたちの真の姿が人間の皮をかぶった爬虫類のような外見であること、彼らが人間を食料にしようとしていることを知る。マイクが人類滅亡の危機をはらむこの恐るべき陰謀を公表すると、ビジターたちは一転、武力と技術力で人類を支配しようと行動を開始。しかし人類の一部はレジスタンスを結成し、ビジターたちに抵抗していく！
