元金融アナリストで、横領罪で7年服役し、1ヶ月前に出所したリンジーが、刑務所を訪れた後に姿を消す。今13歳と16歳になっている息子2人は、刑の確定時、夫の弟夫妻を保護者に指名。リンジーの夫は裁判時のストレスが元で心臓発作を起こして死んでいた。リンジーは車で事故を起こしており、隣に別の車のタイヤ痕があった。リンジーの車から、髪ゴムに仕込んだ鎮痛剤オキシコドンが発見される。
