原作はアレックス・ヘイリーによるピューリッツァー賞受賞のノンフィクション。1977年にアメリカでオンエアされると、50％近い驚異の高視聴率をたたき出した。そしてその年のエミー賞では9部門を受賞、翌年のゴールデングローブ賞では最優秀テレビシリーズ賞を受賞。日本では、こうしたアメリカの歴史の暗部に触れる機会が少なかった分、そのショックとインパクトも大きく、放送されると大いに話題を集め、当時の社会現象にまでなった。＜ルーツ＞という言葉はこの作品以降、日本でも外来語として一般に使われるようになる。出演は、TV「新スタートレック」ジョーディ・ラ＝フォージ役のレヴァー・バートン、映画「愛と青春の旅立ち」「アイアン イーグル」のルイス・ゴセット・Jr.、TV「コンバット!」のヴィック・モロー。切ないメロディが印象的なテーマ曲はクインシー・ジョーンズが手がけている。 今回は、日本における初放送時とは異なる、本国初回放送時と同じフォーマットにて、HD字幕版をチャンネル初放送する。
