海外ドラマおすすめコラム vol.4　ドラマ版「FARGO／ファーゴ」がお好きなら、英国サスペンス「ハッピー・バレー 復讐の町」も！

HAPPYVALLEY_yoko.jpg5月のスーパー！ドラマTVは「GRIMM／グリム ファイナル・シーズン」が目玉だが、英国ドラマ「ハッピー・バレー 復讐の町」にもご注目を。

舞台はウェスト・ヨークシャーにある設定の町、ハッピー・バレー。女性の巡査部長キャサリン（サラ・ランカシャー）は幼い男の子の子育てに悩むが、過去に彼女の人生を狂わせた犯罪者が刑務所を出所したと知って復讐心を燃やす。一方、町の会社で経理を担当する中年男性は昇給を認めない社長を恨み、社長の娘の誘拐計画をチンピラどもに持ちかけ……。筆者がすぐに連想したのは、米国のドラマ「FARGO／ファーゴ」のシーズン1。ヒロインが制服警官であること（「FARGO／ファーゴ」は保安官だが）、軽はずみに犯罪に手を染めた男が困ったりあわてたりするのがよく似ているから。

しかし「ハッピー・バレー 復讐の町」がBBCで放送されたのは「FARGO／ファーゴ」が全米放送された直後で、けっして影響は受けていない。また、本作はキャサリンの過去など、「FARGO／ファーゴ」よりシリアスだ（ハッピー・バレーという地名は皮肉）。そして全体的に、ダメな男どもに女性たちが振り回されるという構図が見える。企画と全話の脚本を担当したサリー・ウェインライトは女性で、過去にも「奥さまは首相 ～ミセス・プリチャードの挑戦～」「アンフォーギヴン 記憶の扉」といったドラマでヒロインの奮闘を描いたが、彼女らしい視点が一貫している。

本作は英国のミステリーによくある、事件の真相究明を描くタイプのドラマではなく、次々と事件が起きるタイプで、正確にいうならサスペンス。しかし、登場人物たちの多くが等身大の存在で、失敗をよくするのが、犯罪のプロを描く米国のドラマと一味ちがう見ものになっている。英国アカデミー賞TVの部でドラマシリーズ作品賞に輝いたのも納得。2年後の2016年にはシーズン2が作られ、時期は未定だがシーズン3が作られる可能性も。大いに期待したい。
