7月のスーパー！ドラマTVの目玉は英国ミステリードラマ「ミセス・ウィルソン」の独占日本初放送。筆者はお先に拝見したが、これは傑作だと唸った。英国ミステリーは“渋い”“地味”だと思っている人にこそお薦めしたい。
ヒロインのアリソン・ウィルソン役を演じるのは「刑事ジョン・ルーサー」「アフェア 情事の行方」のルース・ウィルソン。1963年、ロンドン。アリソンよりずっと年上の夫アレック（「ゲーム・オブ・スローンズ」のジョラー・モーモント役で知られるイアン・グレン）は急死するが、アリソンは自分もアレックの妻だという女性の訪問を受けて動揺する。一方で彼女はアレックと秘密情報部“MI6”で出会った当時を振り返るが……。
現在のシーンでは、アリソンが夫に自分以外の妻がいたことの謎解きを描くミステリーが展開するが、過去を描く回想シーンでは、アレックが挑んだ各任務とそれらにアリソンがどう関わったかを描くスパイサスペンスでもある。とにかく驚かされるのは、これが実話であること。アリソンの夫アレックは有名な作家兼スパイなのだ。スパイ活動を通じて着想を得た物語を小説にしていたと聞いて、“そんな、ウソでしょ!?”と思う人もいるだろう。しかし同じようなキャリアを持つ有名な作家はもう1人いる。映画の長寿人気シリーズ「007」の原作者イアン・フレミングだ。フレミングもまた、イギリス海軍情報部時代の経験を基に、「007」を生み出した。
さて本作の冒頭は、アリソンの背中を撮ったカットから始まる。つまり、世にも奇妙な夫と結婚したヒロインの視点から本作が描かれることを静かに暗示している。また、ネタバレになるので詳述はしないが“ウィルソン夫人”というタイトルも巧みなのは、本作を見てみると実によく理解できるだろう。英国アカデミー賞TVの部で3部門にノミネートされたのも納得の高品質ドラマだ。
