春を迎え、ファンにとっては安堵のニュースが届いた。新シーズン更新が明らかになったのは、「NCIS ネイビー犯罪捜査班」（今秋よりシーズン19）、「ブルーブラッド 〜NYPD家族の絆〜」（同シーズン12）、「BULL / ブル 法廷を操る男」（同シーズン6）、「私立探偵マグナム」（同シーズン4）、そしてシェマー・ムーア主演、日本ロケでも話題になった「S.W.A.T.」（同シーズン5）の計5シリーズ。
安定した視聴者数を誇る各シリーズだが、うちロングランシリーズの更新の行方が注目されていた。シーズン19を迎える「NCIS ネイビー犯罪捜査班」だ。現シーズンで毎話1200万人の視聴者を引き付けるお化け番組だが、更新の行方はあるスターの行方でもあった。「NCIS ネイビー犯罪捜査班」の主演、マーク・ハーモンの去就だ。マークは孤高の男ギブスを演じ、米TV界を代表するキャラクターの一人に育てた番組の顔。そのマークが、シーズン19の更新を前に番組を降板するとの噂が流れていたのだ。
今年、マークは70歳。アクションも難しくなる年齢となれば、番組のクオリティを保つため、プロデューサーを兼ねる主演俳優が（そろそろお暇を…）と考えるのも不思議はない。しかし、その噂に対して「NO」と先手を打ったのがCBSサイド。マークの出演無しには新シーズンの更新はありえないと宣したのだ。これを受け、マークも降板を翻意、このたびの新シーズン更新に至ったという。コロナ禍の撮影制限でシーズン17、18のエピソード数は、通常の24話から減少している。新シーズンのエピソード数も現時点で不明、またマークが全エピソードに登場するかについても明らかにされていない。それでも、「NCIS ネイビー犯罪捜査班」の更新は朗報だ。一シーズンでも多くギブスの勇姿を見続けたい、ファンはそう願っているに違いないのだ。
