海外ドラマ最新レポート Vol.350　 「ブラックリスト」のハリー・レニックス、カトリック司祭を目指していた過去を明かす

「ブラックリスト」の名優ハリー・レニックスは、俳優を目指す以前、カトリック教会の司祭を目指していたという。ハリーは、若い頃ドミニコ会の司祭になるべく神学校で学んでいた。しかし学び始めて5年の時が過ぎたころ、演技への思いが強くなり学校を辞めた。神の使いとなる志半ばの5年間を、ハリーは優れた俳優になるため貴重な経験だったと述懐する。
 
「（優れた俳優になるため）僕らは皆の質問に答えなくてはならない。その質問とは、時に奥が深くて、言葉にするのに熟考しなければならないこともある」
ハリーは具体的に誰かの質問に答えているわけではないかもしれない。演技とは、観客・視聴者に言葉・身体を通して何かを説得すること。時に難解な説得もあるだろう。その時、神学校で学んだ経験が役に立つのだという。
 
そして「ブラックリスト」のハロルド・クーパー役を演じているハリーは、映画『マトリックス』シリーズや『スーパーマン』シリーズへの出演でも知られている。かつて神の使いを目指した経験からか、近年人気の大作映画に登場する超人的なパワーがかつて学んだ神の力を思い起こさせるという。「かつて情熱にあふれた映画といえば、たいていは宗教的な題材だった。神の力が超人的なパワーを生み出すといったような。それが現代ではスーパーヒーローに変わったのさ」
 
『十戒』（1956年）、『ベン・ハー』（1959年）など過去の大作といえば、宗教を題材にしたものが多かった。超人的な力＝神への畏怖だったのだ。スーパーヒーロー物を含め、近年、動画配信サービスの普及で作品の製作本数が格段に増した。俳優にとって有難いこと、けれど一概に良いとは言えないとハリー。
「クオリティの問題さ。量ばかり増えても質の問題は残されている。平凡な作品ばかりじゃ、俳優にとって進歩とは言えないんだ」
 
演技に対する真摯さは司祭を目指した若い頃のそれと変わりはない。その追究心がハリーの演技に説得力を生む。
