海外ドラマ最新レポート Vol.384　 「NUMBERS 天才数学者の事件ファイル」のデビッド・クラムホルツ、祖父は〇〇〇だった！

「NUMBERS 天才数学者の事件ファイル」で天才数学者チャーリー・エプスを演じるデビッド・クラムホルツは、NYのユダヤ系コミュニティで生まれ育った。 ユダヤ民族と言えば歴史上長い間、迫害を受けてきたことで知られる。その史実は、映画『シンドラーのリスト』『ライフ・イズ・ビューティフル』など、数多くの作品で描かれてきた。デビッド自身も出演したドラマシリーズ「プロット・アゲンスト・アメリカ」で、迫害されるユダヤ人を演じた。当然、演技の上ではあったものの、彼らの苦しみをわが身の様に感じたという。
 
それだけに「僕は絶対逃げない。ユダヤ人の半分はとても強いんだ」と自らのルーツに胸を張る。デビッドの父方の祖父母はポーランドから米国に移住してきたユダヤ系移民なのだ。 新天地を求めてやって来た祖父だが、米国が両手を広げて歓迎してくれたわけではなかった。 「僕の祖父はマイヤー・ランスキーのお抱え運転手だったらしいんだ」 ランスキーと言えば、ラッキー・ルチアーノら米国禁酒法時代の大物マフィアの金庫番だったことで史実に残るギャングスターの一人。つまり大物ギャングスターの側近である。
 
「彼は悪い奴だったらしいよ。人を傷つけていたかもしれない」 どこか他人事のように話すのは、デビッドに祖父の記憶がほとんどないからだろう。ランスキーの没年は1983年、デビッドはまだ５歳だった。ただ、幸いというべきか、祖父はギャングスターとしての才能にはあまり恵まれていなかった。ランスキーの自伝によれば、デビッドの祖父は「オレの知る限り、一番マヌケなユダヤ人」だったとか。米国の暗黒時代を大物ギャングスターのお抱え運転手として、しぶとく生き抜き、家族を養った。誇れる過去ではないけれど、そのマヌケな祖父を孫デビッドは愛おしく思っている。
