海外ドラマ最新レポート Vol.420　 「NCIS：ハワイ」注目のニュージーランド人俳優、アレックス・タラント

「NCIS：ハワイ」で地元オアフ出身のNCIS特別捜査官カイ・ホルマンを演じるのは、ニュージーランド人俳優のアレックス・タラント。先住民族マオリ人、サモア人、ニウエ人の血を引くエキゾチックな顔立ちのアレックスは、話題のTVシリーズ版「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング：力の指輪」にもレギュラー出演している注目の俳優だ。
 
アレックスはニュージーランドの小さな海辺の町ラグランの生まれ。アイランドで構成されるハワイとは共通点がある。しかし、ハワイ自慢のビーチをアレックスは、他の誰とも違う視点から見てしまうという。
 
「ラグレンは海産物の宝庫なんだ。だから僕はお腹がすくと海にビーチに出かけたものさ」 ニュージーランドの国立演劇学校トイ・ワカアリを卒業、俳優として前途洋々のアレックスだが、6人家族で決して裕福に育ったわけではないらしい。 「愉快だよね、ハワイにいても、僕にはビーチで日焼けを楽しんだり、サーフィンしたりする習慣がないんだ。僕にとってビーチは食べ物を集める場所なのさ。僕はどこをどう探せば何が見つかるか知っているんだ」 
 
海に囲まれたハワイの環境には慣れたものの、「NCIS：ハワイ」にキャストされたことにはちょっぴり複雑な気持ちを抱いているという。 「本来なら僕の役はハワイ出身の俳優が務めるべきだと思うんだ」 自分が役を勝ち取った裏には、敗れ去った俳優たちの存在がある。アレックスは幸いにもニュージーランドで撮影されている「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング：力の指輪」で役を取れたが、同じく世界中からやってきた俳優たちも主要な役を勝ち取った。だから敗れた地元の仲間たちの悔しさが手に取るように分かるのだ。
 
「ショービジネスに関してハワイはまだ発展段階だと思う。そのうち僕の代わりとなる俳優が出てきたら、役を譲るつもりだよ」 謙虚な姿勢もアレックスの愛されるゆえん。オアフ出身のNCIS捜査官カイ・ホルマンとして、誰からも認められる日が来るのもそう遠くはなさそうだ。
