海外ドラマ最新レポート Vol.604 　「CSI: ベガス」マット・ローリアの意外な過去

「CSI: ベガス」でジョシュア・フォルサムCSI捜査官を演じるマット・ローリアが、米エンタメ番組のインタビューに答え、意外な過去について明かしている。
 
「ピエロになろうと考えていたんだよ」
イケメン俳優として、20代後半に出演していた「Friday Night Lights(原題)」でブレイクしたマット。順調な俳優生活を送る前に、実はピエロを目指してフロリダ州のピエロ学校に通っていた時期があるのだという。
「知り合いの女の子が副業でピエロをやってたんだ。誕生パーティみたいなちょっとしたイベントに呼ばれてたね」
ちょうど人生に迷っていた頃。週末ピエロとして生き生き活動する友人が眩しく見えた。
「そこで僕はピエロ学校を見つけた。ちゃんとしたピエロになりたかったから、クラスは全部取ったよ。バルーンアートからジャグリング、簡単なマジックもできるようになった。いろいろなパフォーマンスがあるんだ」
 
俳優として成功するくらいだから、もともと器用な人なのだろう。クラスではまずまずの成績だったとか。
「まあ、正直に言うとね、僕はマイナーリーグくらいじゃないかな。トップレベルの成績だったとは言わない。だけど出来は良かったと思うよ」
クラスを取っていただけではない。実際に人前でパフォーマンスしたこともある。
「耳から首まですべて白塗りをしてピエロになりきると、人の本性が見えてくる気がしたね。皆ピエロに対して、すごく驚くわけさ、それと同時に恐れているようにも見えた。だから、僕はある程度人の心を読めるようになったと思う。人を真正面から見つめる勇気ももらえた」
 
ピエロの道を突き進めば、メジャーリーグ・レベルに到達できたのかもしれない。けれど、やはりマットは俳優を選んだ。
「ピエロは相手からの反応が直接返ってくる仕事。それって、今の僕に役立ってるんじゃないかな」
 
目の前の一人を楽しませることに集中したピエロ時代、その経験はマットにとって、俳優人生を支える礎となっているに違いない。
