海外ドラマ最新レポート Vol.649 　「NCIS: ニューオーリンズ」CCH・パウンダー、運命を変えたあの一球

「NCIS: ニューオーリンズ」のCCH・パウンダーは、長いキャリアの中、「ER 緊急救命室」「ザ・シールド ～ルール無用の警察バッジ～」などTVシリーズで4度エミー賞ノミネートを受けている実力派女優だ。
 
パウンダーの生まれたのは、南米の小国ガイアナ。幼い頃、両親と共に米国に移住、その後、英国の寄宿舎学校に通った経歴の持ち主だ。
優れた演技力、そしてあまりにも海外ドラマファンにはお馴染みの顔であるために、子供の頃から女優志望と思いきや、意外にもTVや映画とは無縁の青春時代を送った。
 
その才能に気づいたのは、1975年、パウンダーが22歳の時。
「当時は舞台に立っていました。上手くやっていたとは思いますが、TVや映画の仕事は頭にありませんでした」
限られた空間での演技が、映像でのそれにつながるとは思ってもいない。アマチュア演劇、周りにそちらの世界に進んだ仲間がいなかったのかもしれない。
 
きっかけは痛烈だった。
「ある時、私の頭にクリケットのボールが飛んできたのです。頭蓋骨を直撃しました」
クリケットのボールは野球で使われるものより重くて硬い。打ち所が悪ければ、今のパウンダーはいなかったはずだ。
「当時は修道女が運営する寄宿舎学校で生活をしていました。彼女たちが世話をしてくれたのです」
パウンダーが演劇をしていたことから、詩を暗唱させれば脳の機能が回復するかもと修道女たちは考えたらしい。
「最初は2人の修道女を前に詩を暗唱していました。そのうち5人、10人と詩を聞きに来る人が増えてきて、自分は詩を暗唱しているだけでなく、パフォーマンスをしているんだと気づきました。皆楽しんでくれていたのです」
 
修道女たちの反応は、舞台のそれとはまた別だった。自分だけの観客の存在を意識した最初の時だった。
「自分の声と言葉が人を動かすことができるんだと分かったのです」
それはパウンダーに希望を与えたに違いない。プロの女優になる。無限の見えない観客を前にするTVや映画への挑戦の始まりでもあった。
 
パウンダーの命を奪いかけたクリケットのボール。皮肉にもそれは彼女の人生を180度変えた幸運の一球でもあったのだ。
