米CBSで2007年から12シーズン続いた「ビッグバン★セオリー ギークなボクらの恋愛法則」。毎週放送されるたび高視聴率を叩き出した超人気シットコムシリーズだ。その「ビッグバン★セオリー ギークなボクらの恋愛法則」で主役のシェルドンを演じたジム・パーソンズは、現在、映画や舞台、TVなど多方面に活躍している。
それでもジムといえば、世間のイメージはやっぱりシェルドン。米誌のインタビューで、「ビッグバン★セオリー ギークなボクらの恋愛法則」の続編について質問に答えている。
「(現在51歳の)僕が70歳でまたシェルドンを演じるとなると、身震いがするでしょうね」と苦笑のジム。「(続編出演は)絶対にあり得ないとは言えない」とリップサービスするものの、本音は限りなくゼロに近いらしい。その理由は二つ。
「一番の理由は、僕がやりたいことをやる人間だからです。このインタビューを受けているのも僕が受けたかったから。そしてもう一つの理由は、皆さんにも分かってもらえると思うのですが、あの当時、僕らはカミナリに打たれたかのような時間を生きていました。もう二度とあんな時間は過ごせないでしょう。僕らは変化し続けています。今の僕が、シェルドンを演じていた時のようなインスピレーションをまた得ることができるか、それは無理だと思うのです」
ジムがシェルドンを演じ始めたのは34歳の時。あの頃、34歳のジムは何者でもなかった。何者でもない、がむしゃらな自分に戻れるかと問えば、スターになった51歳のジムには到底無理な話なのだ。
「ビッグバン★セオリー ギークなボクらの恋愛法則」の放送が終了してから6年近く。レジェンドとなったシットコムは、現在も世界中で配信・再放送されている。あの頃のシェルドン、レナード、ペニーたちはいつだって健在、これからも新しいファンを獲得し続けることだろう。
