シカゴ近郊クック郡総合病院のＥＲ（緊急救命室）。腕利き内科医グリーンは、私立病院から好条件で誘いを受け、ＥＲを続けるかどうか迷っていた。そんな折帰宅したばかりの看護師長キャロルが自殺未遂を起こしてＥＲに担ぎこまれるのだが・・・
