アフガニスタン。市内をパトロール中の海兵隊のパトロール隊が過激派の襲撃を受ける。身を隠す海兵隊員たちだったが、キルパトリック上等兵だけが敵の前に進み出て、反撃むなしく銃弾の雨を浴び、命を落とす。キルパトリックの上官ホワイト大尉は、キルパトリックを診断した従軍分析医マロン中佐を告発。中東では「戦闘のストレス」に悩む兵士が多く、治療が必要と診断された兵士は「シェルター」と呼ばれる入院施設で行動を監視され、復帰してよいと分析医が診断をくだせば任務に戻ることになっており、キルパトリックもその1人だったのだ。
