ニュージャージーのマフィア「ソプラノ・ファミリー」のボス、トニー・ソプラノはストレスと心労が重なって倒れ、精神分析医ドクター・メルフィのもとを訪れる。家庭生活においては、妻カーメラとの険悪な夫婦関係や娘のメドウの母親への反発、トニーの母リヴィアも悩みの種。仕事においては、マフィアの組員になりたがっている甥っ子のクリスが軽率な行動を起こし、その後始末に追われる。また、伯父のアンクル・ジュニアもトニーのことをよく思っていない。問題が山積みなのだ。
