1960年のラスベガス。弟ジャック、息子ディクソンと牧場を営むラルフ・ラムは、ある日、戦争中の上官で現市長のベネットから核実験場に呼び出される。そこには殺害された女性の死体が遺棄されていたのだが、彼女は知事の姪サマンサだった。保安官のクライドが行方不明のため、市長は戦時中に優秀なＭＰだったラルフに捜査の指揮を依頼する。
