プレッツのクラスでは生徒たちの数学の理解度がかんばしくない。同僚の先生たちは４月に行われる州の試験に合格するように教えろと言われる。さらに生徒の心配をするより、新人のプレッツは自分のことを心配した方がいいと忠告されてしまう。一方カルケティはストリートのパトロールに同行するが、そこでは逮捕件数を上げるため小規模な麻薬犯罪の摘発に無駄な時間と人材が費やされていることを知る。
