郊外に住むご近所同士の２夫婦。ケイトがジュリーの家を訪ねている時に黒っぽいバンが停まり、２人は誘拐される。ジュリーの夫、アダムは保険業者で、自分やジュリーが恨みを買う覚えはないが、２週間ほど前に、自分の家で使っていたロン･リーガートが、家にピアノの練習に来ている小学生に怖い思いをさせていたことを知り、ロンをクビに。通報すると、ロンは仮釈放中だったこともあり、部屋はもぬけの殻だったという。
