海外ドラマ最新レポート Vol.612 　クリスティーン・バランスキー、「グッド・ファイト」ファイナルシーズン後は一休み?

「グッド・ファイト」で主演を務めるクリスティーン・バランスキーが米誌のインタビューに答え、同ファイナルシーズン後に考えている時間の過ごし方について語った。
 
「もう一度原点に戻って、勉強したいと思っています」
1980年、クリスティーンがオフブロードウェイでプロデビューを果たしたのは、28歳の時。以降、40年以上も舞台、映画、TVシリーズと一線を突っ走ってきた。
「グッド・ファイト」やそのオリジナルシリーズ「グッド・ワイフ」のシリアス演技が印象的なクリスティーンだが、舞台ではコメディエンヌぶりを発揮。ファンならばミュージカル「スウィーニー・トッド」 や映画『マンマ・ミーヤ！』で歌って踊る姿を知っているかもしれない。
 
実績十分。キャリアも十分。それなのに、まだ勉強したいとは!
「歌の勉強をし直したいんです。それとボイストレーナーか、発声の先生について難しい台詞や詩の朗読に再び取り組んでみたいのです」
米ステージアートの名門ジュリアード音楽院で演技を学んだ。だからクラシックな勉強法に抵抗はない。
「私は言葉が好きなんです。自分が発する言葉で作品を作り上げたい、そんな夢を持っています。たとえばシェイクスピアなど古典的な文章、長い詩でもいいですね」
 
クリスティーンはライフワークとして、アルフレッド・テニスンの「ユリシーズ」を学んでいるという。テニスンは1800年代のイギリス人詩人。措辞と韻律の美しさで世界的に知られている。長編の詩「ユリシーズ」は彼の代表作の一つだ。
「毎年、『ユリシーズ』の独白に挑戦しています。まだ全編を暗記できていないのですが、その美しい詩のリズムを自分のものにしたいと思っています。その技術をもう一度、身に着けたい。ジュリアードで学んだことです」
あくなき好奇心。しかし、「グッド・ファイト」後のクリスティーンにそれほど勉強する時間があったのかは分からない。
2022年、「グッド・ファイト」のファイナルシーズンを迎えた同じ年にHBOから新主演シリーズ「ギルデッド・エイジ -ニューヨーク黄金時代-」がスタートしているのだ。
 
年齢を重ねた分だけ、学びも重ねる。クリスティーン、72歳売れっ子の秘訣はそこにある。
