海外ドラマおすすめコラム vol.97　名コンビ、ジミーとキムにどんな"再生"が訪れる?「ベター・コール・ソウル ファイナル・シーズン」

スーパー！ドラマＴＶでは「ベター・コール・ソウル ファイナル・シーズン(シーズン6)」を日本初放送中。傑作「ブレイキング・バッド」の人気キャラ、ソウル・グッドマン(ボブ・オデンカーク)がまずは本名のジミー・マッギルとして登場し、その過去を描く。
 
番組の前半ではジミーと兄チャック(マイケル・マッキーン)の確執を描いたが、シーズン4からジミーはソウルを名乗るように。全6シーズンの本作にとって絶妙なターニングポイントだった。
そして、チャックに代わって愛するキム(レイ・シーホーン)との関係がジミーにとって重要に。「ブレイキング・バッド」の主人公ウォルター(ブライアン・クランストン)もそうだが、本作も「ブレイキング・バッド」も“生まれ変わる”がテーマなのではないか。
自分が生き残るためには何でもするジミーだが、筆者はキリスト教における“再生”を重ね、違法行為を中心とするブラックユーモアが多い本作であってもどこか品格を感じる。
真面目な弁護士だったキムも、ジミーとの出会いを通じて生き返ったのではないか。
 
さてこのシーズン6(米国では前半7話、後半6話と分けて放送)、ジミーとキムに大きな転機が訪れるという、まさにクライマックスにふさわしい展開だ。2人にどんな“再生”が訪れるか、大いに楽しんでみたい。
考えるとジミー役のオデンカークも、“再生”を続けてきたアーティストだ。全米ヒットバラエティ「サタデー・ナイト・ライブ」などの構成作家だったが俳優業もするようになり、「ブレイキング・バッド」で“ブレイク”したのは40代半ば。
オデンカークもまた“再生”したように思える。
 
そんなオデンカーク、2022年4月18日に有名なハリウッド・ウォーク・オブ・フェームに自身の星が刻まれたが、場所が「ブレイキング・バッド」のクランストンの隣というのが泣かせる。
61歳という年齢は“もう”ではなく“まだ”だろう。今後の飛躍に期待したい。
