衝突事故を起こした相手とモメて殺された女子大生アリーの死体が、一晩でミイラ化していた。検視の結果、R22という冷却剤を浴びて皮膚の水分が失われたと判明。この冷却剤が大量に盗まれていたスケートリンクにホームズが話を聞きに行くと、管理人が窃盗事件をでっち上げ、冷却剤を横流ししていたことが分かる。
