相乗りサービス会社「ズース」の運転手ゲイレン・バローが、タクシーと見られる車に轢かれ殺された。ホームズは、残されたパーツから、犯行に使われたのは10年以上前に製造された元タクシー車両だと気付き、犯人はバローを殺害する目的でこの車両を購入し、タクシー運転手の犯行に見せかけたのだろうと推理する。
