自動車強盗と車の運転手が撃ち合い、両者が死んだかに見える二重殺人事件が発生。だが、死体に不自然な点が多く、ホームズらは同一犯が2人を殺し現場を偽装したと考える。付近のゴミ箱から、車外で死んでいたブッチ・カラハンのカメラが見つかり、中には車内で死んだジャレッド・タルトの死体の写真が残っていた。だが写っていた死体の姿勢は、実際のタルトの死体とは違う。
