ハーモンはマティーの後見人になるため、州に対し申請を提出。彼の後見人としての適性を見定めるべく調査が入るものの、子育ての経験もなく準備不足のハーモンは調査官の質問に対しても「検討中です」と答えることばかりで、はかばかしい感触が得られない。自分の人柄や評判を証言してくれる人が必要となったハーモンは、マックに頼みに行く。しかし、マティーの件を知らされていなかったマックは、ハーモンが自分との間に置いた距離にショックを受け反発。 2人は口論となり、決裂する。
