病院に運ばれたバートレット大統領はわき腹を撃たれていたものの命に別状のないことが分かる。またアビーは麻酔の担当医に、バートレットが多発性硬化症をわずらっていることを告げ、「マスコミに話すかどうかはあなたの自由だ」と言う。一方ジョシュは肺の損傷が激しく、危険な状態に陥る。薄れ行く意識の中でジョシュの記憶は、ホインズ上院議員のスタッフだった三年前に戻っていく。
