ダニーの知り合いでチャイルド・サービスのポリーから、彼女の担当する黒人の子供ウィリアムが失踪したと連絡を受ける。警察も家出だろうと動かず、ウィリアムが失踪するわけがないと主張するポリーの熱意に押され動き出したダニーらだったが、調べるうちに本当にウィリアムが何らかの事件に巻き込まれた可能性が出てくる。兄ウィリアムと引き離され、施設に入れられた妹ターシャのもとに朝4時、ウィリアムが来て2万5千ドルもの金を預けて後に失踪していたのだ。
