ニューヨークの一流脳外科医ブラウンは、妻を交通事故で亡くし、今までの仕事優先の生き方を帰るべく、息子エフラムと娘デリアを連れコロラドのエバーウッドという田舎町へ引っ越す。しかしもともとうまくいっていなかったブラウンとエフラムの関係は、今回の引っ越しを強行したことでさらにこじれ、しかもエバーウッドに無料診療所を開いたことで、これまで独占状態だった町唯一の医者アボットと対立する。
