大統領は共和党の上院議員ヴィニックを国連大使に指名したいと言い出し、ジョシュは気が進まないながらもヴィニックの意向を伺いに行く。だがヴィニックは国連大使のポストを断り、大統領選に出馬することを明らかにする。ジョシュはカリフォルニアのリベラル寄りの共和党議員であるヴィニックが党の指名を勝ち取ることはないと言うが、レオはヴィニックがカリフォルニアを制したら、どんな対抗馬を立てても民主党に勝ち目はないと言う。
