めぼしい殺人事件がなく暇を持て余したホームズは、死体安置所に面白い事件がないか探しに行く。すると交通事故死として処理されていたレオ・バニンの遺体を見て、彼が誰かを殺したことを見抜く。レオ・バニンは介護施設の看護師で教会にも通う敬虔な信者だったが、本名はヴィタリー・アンドロポフ、｢ブラトヴァ」ポーランド支部の殺し屋だった。
