ニューヨーク近郊に住む元海兵隊員が地元のレイプ事件の参考人として呼ばれた後、行方不明になる。彼は日本に駐留中レイプ犯として5年服役し、不名誉除隊になって帰国していた。母親の話では先週はずいぶん落ち込んでいたが、3日間北部の友達を訪ねたあとはゴキゲンだったという。しかしアンディが北部の友達を訪ねたというのはウソで、実際は東京を訪ねていたと判明。レイプ事件との関連を調べるためジャックはすぐ東京に飛ぶ。
