郊外に住む平凡な主婦リアが、不似合いなマンハッタンのアートギャラリーで男に追いかけられて消える。リアは息子に手がかからなくなってきて、もともと教会のボランティアにも熱心だったが、家族が親しくしている牧師グレッグが言うには、何か新しい人生の目的を必要としているようだったという。保険会社の部長を勤める夫のケンは家においてある銃がなくなったといいリアの安否を心配する。
