元地方検事補で弁護士のジェニファーがハイウェイでスピード違反のキップを切られたのを最後に行方不明に。オフィスは荒らされており、車はオフィスの下に停めてあった。同僚の証言から、ジェニファーは以前ジェンセンという弁護士と付き合っていたが、彼に妻がいるのが分かり、別れた後にもう1人誰かと付き合ったようだが同僚には名前も知らせないうちに「もう別れた」と言ったのだという。そのもう1人が、失踪4日前に彼女と食事していたデイビスだと分かり、 FBIオフィスに呼んで話を聞くが、ジャックは直感でデイビスを怪しいと思い、彼の調査をさせながらなるべくオフィスに長くとどめようとする。
