ホームレス連続殺人がでっち上げであることがダニエルズからカルケティ市長に伝えられる。カルケティは知事選を控えているため、絶対に事件がでっちあげだとは公表できない。ガスはスコットの捏造に確信を持ち、クレバナウに報告するが、ピューリッツァ賞を目前に控え、クレバナウはまったく信じようとしない。そこへ新たなホームレスの殺人の報告が。だがそれは明らかに模倣犯の仕業だった。
