ウェストポート大学のフットボールチームのヘッドコーチ、ジム・クーパーが、解雇を言い渡された晩に消息を絶つ。自宅のパソコンには書きかけの辞表が残されており、匿名の女性から捜索願が出されていた。コーチの家には、膝を痛めた選手エバン・ヤングが間借りしていたが、エバンはけがでレギュラーから外される前にも、大学試験に身代わりを使ったことがコーチにばれて、出場停止処分になっていた。また、エバンは全米大学競技協会に公開移籍の申請を出していた。エバン以外にも、何人ものメンバーが出場停止になっていることがわかり、その中の誰かがコーチを逆恨みした可能性が出てくる。
