ロックビルという町で白昼、35歳の主婦ドリスが忽然と姿を消した。ロックビルでは12年前にも、5人の女性が行方不明になって全員が遺体で見つかった事件があり、当時その事件を担当したジャックは、マーティンを連れて、現在服役中の犯人ランディ・ソーントンを訪ねる。そこで、ソーントンに面会に来たボブ・シャーマンという弁護士の映像を見たジャックは戦慄する。その弁護士は、あの少年ばかりを狙う性犯罪者であり、スポールディング・アカデミーの元校長、グラハム・スポールディングだった。
