火災現場で2人の同僚を助けた消防士スコットが、その後帰宅途中に忽然と姿を消す。妻トレーシーには「1時間ほどで帰る」と電話していたが、そのときに「消防士を辞めたい」と洩らしていたことが判明。スコットに助け出された同僚の1人ビリーは、重傷を負って病院へ運ばれたが、昏睡状態で命が危ぶまれていた。また、もう1人の同僚ガスは、ギャンブルにのめり込んで家を失い、妻と子供にも逃げられ、スコットの家に身を寄せていた。トレーシーはジャックに、3 人が誰も立ち入れないほどの固い友情で結ばれていることを話す。
