ボストンで連続絞殺事件が発生。被害者はいずれも男性だが、性別以外は年齢も人種もバラバラ。どの被害者も財布を奪われていたが、金銭目当てではないらしい。BAUは犯行の目的を「個人の証を奪い、犯人自身が認められること」と推理する。やがて捜査が進み、被害者たちの共通点が浮かび上がってきた。
