ある朝、出勤途中のリードは男子高校生から声をかけられる。大学でリードの講義を聴講したという少年は娼婦の連続殺人について興味を持っている様子で「ナイフで刺して髪を切ったとしたらどういう意味か」と尋ねる。何か引っかかるものを感じるリードだが、ＢＡＵへ来るよう誘うと少年は名乗らずに立ち去ってしまう。リードが地元警察に問い合わせたところ、少年が語った通りの死体が４日前に発見されたばかりだと分かる。
