ある朝、プレンティスの母エリザベスが何の前触れもなくＢＡＵを訪れる。同行してきたのは、ボルティモアに住むロシア人のチェルナス母子。一家の主であるセルゲイが誘拐され、10万ドルの身代金を要求されたというのだ。司法当局を信用しない彼らが、元ウクライナ大使だったエリザベスに助けを求めたのだが、正式な手続きを踏まずに捜査を依頼するエリザベスの強引なやり方にホッチは戸惑いながらも押し切られる。
